West Windsor, NJ - The Sacred Heart University tennis teams lost in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center. The Pioneer men lost a tough match to Robert Morris, 4-3, while the women's squad was swept, 4-0, by Mount St. Mary's.

The SHU men got off to a good start in doubles when Chris Ujkic and Michael Syer won the number on doubles match, 8-1. However, RMU won the second doubles match and took the point when Nick Paganetti and Robert Switzer teamed up to beat Cole Conrad and Jinal Shah, 8-6.

SHU again got started quickly in singles as freshmen Kirill Kasyanov and Ujkic both won their number one and two singles matches in straight sets. However, RMU took the third and fourth singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. Shah beat David Pinto, 6-0, 6-3 to take the match to a decisive singles match. In the number six singles, Switzer edged Conrad in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to give the Colonials the match.

On the women's side, the Mount opened the match by taking the doubles points. The No. 1 tandem of Emma Haley and Emily Bolchoz bested Nicole Betz and Darcy Demers, 8-4. The Mount's No. 3 tandem of Ashley Wentzel and Emily Grugan earned an 8-5 win over Elizabeth Harrington and Mandy Finkelstein.

In singles play, Chelsea Johnson cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 2 singles spot over Demers. Bolchoz defeated Betz, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 3 position and Wentzel swept past Finkelstein, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 6 position.
 

 

The SHU men will take on Wagner in a consolation match Saturday at the Mercer County Tennis Center. The women's squad faces Saint Francis (PA) in their consolation match.
