Football Holds First Spring Scrimmage

April 12, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team held its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning at Seibert Stadium.

"I think it was indicative of our whole spring, our guys made some plays on both sides of the ball," Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said. "We got some good work in the kicking game. I was glad to see the defense get a couple of turnovers."

All three quarterbacks on the Samford roster saw extensive action. Seth Harkness completed 8-of-13 passes for 55 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown to Geoffrey Moore. Dante Williams completed 6-of-13 passes for 37 yards, and Richie Fordham was good on 6-of-10 passes for 28 yards.

Redshirt junior running back Harris Johnson rushed six times for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson had one 30-yard touchdown and one score from one-yard out.

Chris Evans rushed seven times for 45 yards. Marcus Rice had four rushes for 25 yards, and Alex Barnett rushed seven times for 35 yards.

"I thought we ran the ball pretty well," Sullivan said. "We didn't throw the ball down field as much as we'll need to. All of the quarterbacks did some good things and some things we need to iron out. I thought we were good in the kicking game as well."

Defensively, Omar Johnson and Erik Peterson each had an interception. Peterson returned his interception 70 yards.

Sophomore place-kicker Mark Prevost made two-of-three field goals and all three extra-point attempts. Prevost made field goals from 40 and 39-yards out. He also missed a 40-yard attempt.

Samford will take Sunday off from practice, and the team will practice again Monday night at 7 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
