Samford Men's Golf Places Ninth In Argonaut Invitational

Feb. 26, 2008

PENSACOLA, Fla. ---- The Samford men's golf team fought tough weather conditions Tuesday in day two of the West Florida Argonaut Invitational to close out play in its first tournament of the spring season. The Bulldogs finished ninth out of ten teams but contrary to the standings, the Samford men felt good about their performance in the two-day tournament held at the Pensacola Country Club. The Bulldogs shot 300 in round one, 291 in round two and 297 in round three.

"I'm very pleased with how we played in this tournament," Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks said, "especially with our score of 291 in round two. We played in some tough conditions today. It was hot then cold, stormy then calm, but overall, I'm pleased with where our team is right now."

The Samford men finished the tournament with a two-day total of 899, with junior Ian Cutting leading the playing five. Cutting landed in a tie for 19th place, shooting 220 (74-71-75) in the tournament. Martin Bunt (73-76-79) and Tyler Baird (75-73-80) tied for 38th place, shooting 228 while John Turnipseed tied for 45th place with a score of 232 (86-71-75). Rounding out the Samford playing five was Houston Hough at 55th place, shooting 242 (78-85-79).

Host team West Florida (847) was the winner of the tournament followed by Illinois, New Orleans, Illinois State and Eastern Kentucky and Radford round out the top five. Liberty took seventh place, followed by Belmont at eighth, Samford at ninth and Connecticut at tenth.

The Samford men get back into action in two weeks when they host the Samford Intercollegiate at Limestone Springs Golf Course in Oneonta, Ala. The two-day event will kick off on March 10.
