Barrs Named OVC Player Of The Week

April 14, 2008

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Samford softball player Amanda Barrs received Ohio Valley Conference honors Monday as the Bulldogs' sophomore pitcher from Harrisburg, N.C., was named the OVC player of the week.

Barrs, who's natural position is first base, has been forced into the starting pitcher role this season and has compiled a team-best 5-5 record.

Sophomore Amanda Barrs hit a pair of home runs last week, including a first-inning grand slam against Jacksonville State.

Last week, despite starting all four games in the pitching circle, she also paced the Bulldogs' offense with a stellar .500 batting average. Barrs either drove in or scored 14 of the team's 26 runs and powered a pair of home runs. She also tallied a phenomenal 1.083 slugging percentage and picked up her third stolen base of the season

Only a sophomore, Barrs has already moved into sixth place on Samford's all-time home run list with 11.

She also extended her team-high hitting streak to six-consecutive games and increased her RBI total to 28. Against Jacksonville State on Wednesday, Barrs turned in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate and blasted a first-inning grand slam. In the Southeast Missouri series, she went a combined 4-for-8 with seven RBI and two runs scored.

Morehead State's Alex Gjevre was named the OVC's pitcher of the week.

She picked up all three of the Eagles' wins and only gave up three hits and an unearned run in a key 4-1 victory against Eastern Kentucky. Gjevre also hurled a shutout versus Jacksonville State on Saturday and tallied eight strikeouts in the 2-0 win.

The Samford University softball team will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m., as the Bulldogs travel across town to face the Birmingham-Southern Panthers at the BSC Softball Park.
