Women's Tennis Drops A Tough Loss To College Of Charleston

March 2, 2008

CHARLESTON, S.C. ---- The Samford women's tennis team picked up their second loss on the season Saturday on the road at College of Charleston. The Bulldogs lost a tough match, 4-3, and are now 5-2 for the 2008 campaign.

This was the second match in a row Samford played without No. 2 player Rebecca Kirven. Taylor Morgan stepped in once again for her teammate at the No. 2 spot but could not come out with a win, losing to Holly Dowse, 7-5, 7-6.

With the Bulldogs up 3-1 in the team score, Anna Jackson held the match outcome in her hands, as a win from the No. 1 court would have clinched the victory for Samford. Jackson was up 5-3 in the third set, but her opponent, Chelsea Albertz won four straight games to take the match, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Andrie Meiring and Katie Weaver won two singles matches for the Bulldogs while Samford won two out of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Meiring defeated Anna Lee Evans (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) at the No. 3 court while Weaver downed Kinsey Casey at the No. 4 court (6-3, 6-4). Samford No. 2 duo Mallory/Morgan defeated Albertz/Evans, 8-5, and No. 3 Bulldog duo Kirven/Meiring defeated Howard/Casey, 8-6, to win the doubles point for the Bulldogs.

Next, the Bulldog women will host Florida A&M before kicking off the conference season. Match play for that meeting is 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion on the Samford campus.
