Women's Tennis Edges By Eastern Kentucky, 4-3

April 11, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford women's tennis team added another win to their Ohio Valley Conference record Friday night making the Bulldogs a perfect 8-0 in conference play. The Bulldogs defeated top-ranked Eastern Kentucky, 4-3, handing the Colonels their first OVC win. The victory places the Samford women at the top of the conference standings now.

Eastern Kentucky took the early advantage, winning the doubles point by taking two duo matches. Lindsey Mallory and Taylor Morgan were the only Bulldog duo who were able to come out with a win, defeating Giles/Euers, 8-3, at the No. 2 doubles court.

In singles play, Andrie Meiring grabbed the first point for the Bulldogs, defeating Meredith Giles at the No. 2 court (6-3, 6-3). Anna Jackson and Morgan would drop matches at the No1 and No. 3 courts, giving the Colonels the 3-1 advantage but Samford would come back with three more wins to take the team match, 4-3. Rebecca Kirven sparked the comeback at the No. 5 court, followed by Mallory with a win at No. 6 and Katie Weaver sealed the victory at the No. 4 position.

The Bulldog women will join the men Saturday in hosting Morehead State in their final home match of the season. Both Bulldog squads will honor their seniors. Samford's women's seniors, Anna Jackson and Katie Weaver, will be among the seven recognized. Match play will begin with the men at 10 a.m., followed by the women at 1 p.m.
