Dons Baseball Wins Sixth Straight; Take Down UC Davis 10-5

March 26, 2008

Final Stats

(San Francisco, CA) - San Francisco continued its hot streak, earning its sixth straight victory with a 10-5 win over UC Davis on Wednesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons (14-10) had 18 hits in the contest, and held the Aggies (14-8) - who were batting .337 as a team - to just eight hits.

Senior shortstop Tavo Hall smashed his second career homerun, a lead-off shot to left in the fourth. His first homerun was on March 8, 2005, when as a freshman, Hall hit a two run shot in the fourth inning of a 10-3 victory over Southern Utah in the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic at Fresno State. Hall played in 131 games between his two long balls.

Four Dons had three hits on the afternoon; senior right fielder Kyle Morgan (3-for-5, three RBI, one run scored), senior second baseman Joey Railey (3-for-3, double, three runs scored, stolen base), junior designated hitter Drew Johnson (3-for-4, three RBI, stolen base), and sophomore catcher Ryan Lipkin (3-for-4, double, two runs scored). Senior first baseman Mitchell Bialosky went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Junior left fielder Zach Kim had a hit, two RBI and a run scored. Also adding singles were sophomore pinch hitter Bobby Ethel and junior third baseman Dane Braunecker.

Junior left-hander Dane Braunecker (2-2) earned the win, allowing four runs (four earned) off five hits, five walks, and struck out seven batters for the third time this season. The Aggies final run came off sophomore righty Alex Kalogrides, off two hits and a walk in 0.2 innings of relief. Freshman LHP Garret Luippold threw the final 2.2 innings, not allowing a run, off one hit, one walk, and struck out one Aggie.

USF scored first with one in the second. Lipkin doubled to start the frame, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Kim's RBI ground out. Then UCD took the 2-1 lead in the top of the third off just one hit, and four walks. The Dons regained the lead with two big innings, plating four in both the third and fourth, and five of their eight runs came with two outs.

In the third, Railey began the inning with a double to left center and moved to third on freshman center fielder Connor Bernatz's groundout. Morgan singled, plating Railey, before Morgan was thrown out at second on a steal attempt. Bialosky reached on an infield single, moved to second on Lipkin's single to right, and went on to third when Kim walked. With the bases loaded, Johnson singled to center, scoring two. Johnson stole second and Kim scored when the second baseman dropped the throw from the catcher.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hall opened it up with his homerun. Railey then doubled to right and proceeded to steal third. Bernatz popped up to shortstop before Morgan singled to right, plating Railey. Bialosky then earned his second infield single of the game, pushing Morgan to second. Lipkin walked to load the bases before Kim hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Morgan. Bialosky advanced to third on the play, putting runners at the corners. Johnson singled to left, plating Bialosky.

UC Davis brought the game to within four, 5-9, with three runs in the sixth, but the Dons added an insurance run in the seventh. Railey singled to center and moved to second on Bernatz's ground out. Morgan singled home Railey with a shot to center.

UCD's senior right-hander Jeff Reekers (2-2) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) off nine hits, two walks, and struck out one.
