(Malibu, CA) - After winning six straight, San Francisco couldn't overcome a seven run sixth inning by No. 9 Pepperdine, and fall 11-2 to the Waves (21-11, 4-2 WCC) in West Coast Conference action at Eddy D. Field. USF (21-12, 5-2) is now tied with No. 13 San Diego for first place in conference standings with identical 5-2 records. USF's offense wasn't completely shut down as they scored two runs in the second inning. Senior RHP Mitchell Bialosky singled through the right side with one out in the frame. After a strikeout, freshman first baseman Stephen Yarrow homered to right center, scoring Bialosky. The homerun in the first for Yarrow as a Don. Freshman center fielder Connor Bernatz and sophomore third baseman Derek Poppert both had 2-for-4 days. Senior shortstop Tavo Hall and senior second baseman Joey Railey each singled in the contest. Railey now has 43 hits on the season, moving him to 204 career base knocks. He needs eight to pass Jason Howard (1998-03/211) for eighth place on the Dons all time hits chart. Bialosky (1-4) earned the loss, giving up eight earned runs off eight hits, a walk, and struck out three waves in 5.0+ innings.
Waves senior right-hander Nathan Newman (5-2) earned the win, allowing two earned runs off eight hits, two walks, and struck out four Dons. USF and Pepperdine meet at 1:00 PM for game two at Eddy D. Field tomorrow. |
