USF Falls at Loyola Marymount 72-67

Feb. 4, 2008

Final Stats

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Loyola Marymount beat San Francisco 72-67 Monday, sending coach Eddie Sutton's team to defeat in the game after a huge comeback earned him his 800th career victory.

Shawn Deadwiler scored 18 points for the Lions (5-18, 2-5 West Coast Conference), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Earlier in the day Sutton became the winningest active coach in major men's college basketball with the resignation of Bob Knight from Texas Tech.

On Saturday he had become just the fifth coach to reach 800 wins with a victory over Pepperdine. Knight has 902 victories.

Deadwiler went 4-for-9 from 3-point range and also had seven rebounds. He made a 3-pointer to finish an 11-0 run that opened the second half and gave Loyola Marymount a 48-37 lead with 15:03 remaining.

San Francisco cut the lead to 71-67 on a basket by Manny Quezada with 7.7 seconds left, but Tim Diederichs made one two of two free throws in the final seconds to save the Lions' win.

Diederichs scored 16 points and Corey Counts had 11 points and eight assists. Orlando Johnson added another 11 points for the Lions.

Dior Lowhorn and Quezada each scored 20 points each for the Dons.

Lowhorn, the conference's leading scorer who played for Knight at Texas Tech before transferring to San Francisco, also pulled down 10 rebounds.

USF completes its three-game road trip when it travels across the Bay Bridge to take on ancient Bay Area and West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's, Friday, February 8 in Moraga. Tip-off against the Gaels is set for a 7:00 PM start from McKeon Pavilion in a game televised live by Comcast.
