Dons Host Marquette Thursday

March 19, 2008

Coming off a 5-2 win over UNLV last Monday, the San Francisco men's tennis team (9-5) now looks to defend home court versus the Marquette Golden Eagles Thursday at the Olympic Club. The dual is set to begin at 1 p.m. PDT.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION: MARQUETTE (10-5)

MU has won eight of its last 11 matches, sweeping five of those contests 7-0. Four othe the Golden Eagles' five losses have come in pairs, to Purdue and No. 58 Louisville in January and most recently, to No. 37 Arizona State and No. 28 Wisconsin in mid-February. After five 7-0 losses in the 2006-07 campaign, MU has not yet been shutout this season, holding its own against nationally-ranked foes.

Marquette opened its three-match swing through California with a tough 4-3 loss to Pacific Monday evening. The setback snapped a three-match winning streak for the Golden Eagles.

Marquette opened the match sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the valuable point. Senior Brett Binkley and sophomore Mark Rutherford improved to 23-7 overall and 9-3 in dual competition with an 8-4 decision at the No. 1 position.

Sophomore Dusan Medan and newcomer Juan-Martin Paredes posted singles victories at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Medan rallied after dropping the first set, while Paredes made quick work of Pacific's Pedro Toledo, 6-4, 6-0.

After taking on the Dons, Marquette will travel to Santa Clara for a Sunday dual.

USF'S LAST DUAL

A win by San Francisco's Einar Hart at the No. 4 position clinched a Dons' 5-2 team victory over UNLV Monday at the Olympic Club. One of USF's seven match wins on the day, Hart topped the Rebels' Bryan Miller in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

USF won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Falko Huttenberger and Asaf Cohen finished first with an 8-6 win over the Rebels' Wesley Burrows and Elliot Wronski. Thong Tu and Rainer Nachbauer followed with an 8-5 win against David Campbell and Luca Barlocchi. Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching, at No. 3, then topped Andrew Giuffrida and Miller, 9-7.

Tu, Huettenberger and Del Rosario joined Hart in singles' victories. Tu won a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Wronski at No. 1. Huttenberger topped Campbell in a tight match 6-4, 7-6 (4) and Del Rosario beat Rony Yeghnazary 6-4, 6-2.
