San Francisco Duals San Jose State Thursday

San Francisco women's tennis (5-9) will dual San Jose State Thursday at Golden Gate Park. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. PDT. ABOUT THE COMPETITION: SAN JOSE STATE (9-7) The Dons and Spartans last battled on April 17, 2007 with USF topping San Jose State 4-3. San Jose State State picked up the doubles point, but the Dons dominated singles winning four of the six decisions. The Dons got straight set wins by Jenny Sperry at four, Joana Macedo at five and Lauren Hickey at six and then battled through three singles matches that went the distance. Camille Pamart overtook Ashley Tavita 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 at number one singles and Mylene Martin defeated Amber Silverstone 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 at three. Dons' Emma Taylor ended up falling in the third set 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1. This past Tuesday, San Jose State defeated UC Santa Cruz, 6-1. Senior Rokie Larijani posted a victory in her last home match of her career. Larijani teamed with Sanda Hadzisabic to defeat the Banana Slugs' Kyla Kessler Rowe and Chrissy Nichol, 8-3, in number-three doubles. The Spartans' number-one doubles tandem of Ashley Tavita and Amber Silverstone posted a decisive victory over Jessica Ruth and Megan Sweeney, 8-3. Silverstone also increased her consecutive win streak in singles play to nine, by defeating Megan Sweeney, 7-6, 6-1, in number-two singles action. Ashley Tavita continued her successful senior season defeating the Banana Slugs' Jessica Ruth, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, in number-one singles. Freshman Anna Guzman defeated Chrissy Nichols in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1, in number-six singles. The Spartans won five out of the six singles matches overall, and four out of the five wins in straight-sets.
USF'S LAST DUAL The San Francisco women's tennis team was overwhelmed by No. 42 Sacramento State last Saturday, losing 6-1 to Hornets. The Dons' Mylene Martin was the lone USF player to score a team point. Martin outlasted Melissa Valenzuela 7-5, 7-6 at No. 2. No. 66 Jennifer-Lee Heinser's win streak, which was 13 entering Saturday's dual, was snapped by No. 45 Katrina Zheltova. Zheltova took the first set 6-4 and then Heinser won the second set 6-2. Zheltova got past Heinser in the third set with a 10-4 score. |
