Mahipala Records Regional Mark in Steeplechase

April 4, 2008

AUSTIN, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams were back in action Friday afternoon at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. While a good majority of the competition took place in the field events for SFA, it was one of 'Jacks' distance runners who stole the spotlight. Junior Keith Mahipala recorded a regional mark in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase posting a time of 9:06.11. His time was good enough to place fourth overall.

Senior Leah Matthews posted a top-five finish for the Ladyjacks in the long jump with a mark of 19-2.75. Classmate Audrey Azu finished just outside the top five in the women's high jump. The former SLC high jump champion cleared a height of 5-5.00 to finish tied for sixth overall. Senior Kristina Windham also competed for the Ladyjacks Friday. She cleared a height of 12-1.50 in the pole vault to finish in a two-way tie for 10th in the event.

The only other Lumberjack in action Friday was senior Zach Ross. The team co-captain clocked a time of 14.24 to finish 14th overall.
