Upstart Cardinals Upset Ladyjacks In Five-Game Thriller

Oct. 27, 2007

Box Score

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - They say all good things must come to an end as Saturday saw the SFA Ladyjacks 62-match conference win streak come to an end at the hands of the upstart Lamar Cardinals. The loss also snaps a 20-match home winning streak for SFA.

The Ladyjacks (21-7, 11-1) led 2-0 at intermission and were up at the 23-21 mark of the third game before the tides turned behind the serve of Ashley Todd. Todd would serve four consecutive service aces to surge Lamar past SFA and eventually take the lead 30-27.

"The difference in the match was definitely game three," head coach Debbie Humphreys said. "It was going to be a difficult thing for them to do to come back from a 2-0 and when we gave up those four aces in a row and that is where the match turned."

Games one and two saw SFA hit at least .327 in each game, but the final three saw the Ladyjacks unable to solve the riddle of the Lamar defense as Justin Gibert's squad never seemed to let a ball hit the floor.

JJ Jones just missed a triple-double with eight kills, 32 assists and 15 digs on the night and Lauren Railey had a double-double with 13 kills and 21 digs.

Traci Rohde was nearly unstoppable for a second straight night with a team-high 17 kills with only two attacks, hitting .395. She would also add four assists, six digs and six blocks.

With the loss the Ladyjacks are still in the driver's seat for a share of the SLC title and have their magic number down to three to clinch the SLC West Division.
