A Night with the Aztecsan Overwhelming Success
Feb. 26, 2008 SAN DIEGO - A crowd of nearly 600 San Diego State alumni and fans made their way to Cox Arena on Thursday, Feb. 21, for the first-ever "A Night with the Aztecs" fundraiser. Over $180,000 was raised for SDSU student-athlete scholarships during the festivities, which included appearances by former Aztec football greats, as well as current student-athletes and coaches. "The event exceeded our expectations," said SDSU director of athletics Jeff Schemmel. "Our fans, alumni and donors showed their tremendous support for our program and raised significant dollars for all 18 sports." With former Aztec gridiron stars Marshall Faulk, Willie Buchanon, Fred Dryer, Brian Sipe and Mike Douglass in attendance, the evening was highlighted by 100 silent auction items and 14 live auction prizes with the proceeds benefiting the San Diego State student-athlete scholarship fund. "All of our student-athletes were so pleased with the excitement and generosity of our fans" said Sherraine Pencil, chair of the SDSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. "It was a great evening and makes us proud to be Aztecs."
