May 6, 2008 SAN DIEGO - For the second consecutive year, 13 of San Diego State's 18 intercollegiate sports showed improvement in the 2006-07 Academic Progress Report scores. The scores, released earlier today by the NCAA, gave perfect scores to the Aztec women's golf, women's tennis, volleyball and water polo programs. "We are pleased and encouraged with the improvement shown by San Diego State in APR, especially those programs at risk," SDSU athletic director Jeff Schemmel said. "It is the result of the hard work and commitment of the coaches, the support and commitment of President Weber to our academic initiatives, and the leadership of (student-athlete academic support services director) Colleen Evans and her staff. Many of our sports are well above the 925 mark, and several had perfect scores. It is another example of our commitment to graduate all our student-athletes." The APR rating is assigned to a sport program and is based on eligibility/graduation and retention. Each student-athlete accrues two, one, or zero points per semester. If a student-athlete is in good academic standing, including on-schedule progress toward a degree, and if they are enrolled, the sport receives two points. If the student-athlete is meeting one and not the other component, the program receives one point and if neither is achieved, the program receives a zero. The score is calculated by dividing the total points received by the total points possible. Teams with an APR score below 925 are subject to contemporaneous penalties. The multiyear score is for the 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 academic years. Five programs received perfect scores in the eligibility/graduation category for the 2006-07 academic calendar. Women's basketball, women's golf, women's tennis, volleyball and water polo received perfect marks in the category. Additionally, five sports received the maximum points allotted in retention, including women's golf, swimming, women's tennis, volleyball and water polo. San Diego State also had five programs that increased their APR multiyear rate by more than 10 points. Women's golf (+18, 933 to 951), volleyball (+15, 936 to 951), water polo (+15, 938 to 953), men's soccer (+13, 942 to 955), women's basketball (+12, 929 to 941) all showed double-digit growth. With 13 sports showing improvement and one sport retaining the same score, only four programs showed a decrease in their APR score, but all still remained well above the 925 mark. Two programs, football (889) and baseball (879), fell below the threshold score despite showing improvement this year on the multiyear APR rate. San Diego State successfully petitioned the NCAA to spread the football scholarship penalty over the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. "We went through an extensive review of our academic support for both baseball and football in the fall of 2007," Evans said. "This review included faculty and staff from various departments within the University. We have an academic improvement plan in place for both teams that we are confident will help us make steady improvement in APR scores. "Both coach Tony Gwynn and coach Chuck Long are 100 percent on board with these plans. I expect that we will see immediate improvement, but it is worth mentioning that with four years of data included in the multiyear average, it may take two or three years before we see baseball and football reach 925 (the NCAA minimum cut score). As long as the trend is up, we'll be fine."
