SDSU Women's Golf Posts Strong Second Round At Sacramento St. Tourney

March 31, 2008

LINCOLN, Calif. - After finishing the first 18 holes in 16th place overall, the San Diego State women's golf team rallied to improve its second-round score by 10 strokes, vaulting into 10th place with a 36-over 612 Monday at the Sacramento State Women's Golf Preview Tournament. The Aztecs logged a first-round 311 earlier in the day, following that up with their best 18 holes of golf thus far this spring with a 301 at the par-72, 5,819-yard Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif.

SDSU's second-round effort of 301 was a spring season-best by nine strokes and is the team's second-best round in 2007-08, trailing only the 299 the Aztecs posted at the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in early October 2007.

Redshirt sophomore Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) led the group of five Aztecs, sitting in a tie for 24th place at 6-over 150, including a team tournament-best and career-low 73 in the second round. Cole had three birdies on the day with her last one coming on her final hole at the par-3 fourth.

Co-captains Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) and Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) are in 41st and 55th place respectively, as Kazarian posted a season-low through 36 holes of 9-over 153.

After carding an uncharacteristic opening round 84, true freshman Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) improved her first-round score by a whopping 10 strokes, ending the day with two straight birdies after three consecutive bogeys. Roberts improved by 21 spots on the individual leaderboard from the first to the second round with her 2-over 74, which also is a career-best round by one stroke. Aztec senior Kim Carmody (Palatine, Ill.) is tied with Roberts at 14-over 158, after carding an 80 and a 78.

Twelfth-ranked Denver leads the 19-school field by 12 strokes over second place Washington State, which is two up on No. 41 Oregon. Washington State's Amy Eneroth fired a second-round 68 to sit in first place individually at 5-under 139, followed four strokes later by Denver's Katie Kempter and UC Davis' Alice Kim.

The teams will tee-off on Tuesday for the third and final round, beginning at 8 a.m. PT at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

First and second-round scores with relation to par March 31, at the Sacramento State Preview Women's Golf Tournament, played at the par-72, 5,819-yard Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif.
