Aztec Softball Earns Fourth Trip to NCAA Tournament

May 11, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS - The San Diego State softball team earned a trip to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship for the fourth time in eight seasons on Sunday. The Aztecs (43-15), who wrapped up their fourth Mountain West Conference regular season title with two victories at UNLV over the weekend, will play California (40-24) Friday (May 16) on the campus of Fresno State at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs (51-11) earned the No. 16 overall seed and will face Sacramento State (32-19) in the other region's pairing at approximately 7:30 p.m.

With program-bests in overall winning percentage (.741) and road winning percentage (.750), SDSU is heading into the tournament on a six-game winning streak, outscoring its opponents, 23-4, over the stretch. Last weekend, San Diego State outhit the Rebels, 26-3, en route to a pair of shutouts (9-0 and 6-0). The Aztecs have also set school records this season in victories (43), home winning percentage (23-5, .821), most MWC wins (15) and walks (162).

This year's national tournament features 64 teams, with four teams participating at 16 regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. The regional winners will advance to super regional competition for a best-of-three series from May 23-24 (Memorial Day Weekend) at eight campus sites. The remaining eight teams will advance to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. The championship final will be a best-of-three-series. The WCWS will be conducted May 29-June 4 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
