SDSU Women's Tennis Opens Weekend with 4-3 Loss to No. 55 New Mexico

April 4, 2008

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The San Diego State women's tennis team opened its three-match Mountain West Conference weekend with a 4-3 loss to No. 55 New Mexico on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. The Lobos (12-7 overall, 4-0 MWC) captured the doubles point before winning the first three singles matches to remain perfect in conference play. The Aztecs, meanwhile, fall to 7-10 overall and 0-3 in league action.

UNM jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after claiming all three doubles contests. Playing together for just the third time this season, Holly Bagshaw and Sisse Nielsen dropped an 8-4 decision to Mackenzie White and Jennifer Ryba at the No. 2 position, while Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov fell to Emma Hayman and Victoria Tessmar by an identical score. The newly formed duo of Eliska Krausova and Kathryn Kitts took the Lobos' No. 1 team of Ola Abou-Zekry and Lucy Scott down to the wire, but came up just short in an 8-7 loss.

In singles action, UNM won the first three contests to clinch the match before the Aztecs posted three triumphs of their own. Julia Trunk and Yusupov both fell in straight sets to their Lobo adversaries before No. 123 Abou-Zekry earned the match-deciding victory over Bagshaw at the top spot.

Despite the loss, SDSU finished the match on a high note, winning the final three contests. Over on court four, Cadua extended her unbeaten streak to six by dispatching Hayman, 6-4, 6-1. Krausova then edged Scott, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 3, before Nielsen concluded the day with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Tessmar in the sixth slot.

San Diego State will look to snap its three-game losing streak on Saturday (April 5) when it faces No. 24 TCU in another neutral-site clash at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 10 a.m. (PDT).
