AZUSA, Calif. - The San Diego State track and field team set eight season bests in six different events on Friday at the Azusa Pacific Invitational in Azusa, Calif.

A pair of sophomores got things underway for the Aztecs as Makenzie Mabry and Lindsay Barajas competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Mabry, from La Crescenta, Calif., established a personal record after crossing the finish line in 11 minutes, 57.59 seconds, more than 14 seconds faster than her previous lifetime best. Barajas, meanwhile, finished in 12th place with a time of 12:18.94.

In the 100, both Aztec sprinters finished with 2008 outdoor season bests. Freshman Britney Bennett posted a time of 12.45, while sophomore Kai Wheeler clocked in with a time of 12.51.

In the 200, sophomore Amber Waddell kept the trend going as she finished with a season-best effort of 25.75 and senior Sonya Schmidt followed suit logging a time of 27.06. Schmidt also ran in the 400 and came through with a 2008-best mark of 1:00.98.

Included in Wheeler, Waddell and Bennett's busy day was the long jump competition. Wheeler owned the top distance among the trio with a jump of 18 feet, 4.50 inches and Waddell posted a season best with a leap of 17-9.50. Bennett, meanwhile, finished the event with a jump of 17-0.50.

Early Friday morning, a pair of Aztecs notched season-best clearances in the high jump after they cleared 4-9.00. Sophomore Wendy Bohn surpassed her previous 2008 best of 4-8.25, while freshman Natalie Peterson matched her season best previously accomplished at the Trojan Invitational.

The Aztecs return to action on Saturday at the Beach Invitational in Cerritos, Calif., beginning at 9 a.m.
