SDSU Track and Field Completes Day One at Steve Scott Invitational
May 3, 2008 IRVINE, Calif. - In its final regular-season tune-up before the Mountain West Conference Championships, the San Diego State track and field team traveled north Saturday for the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine. A total of five Aztecs set personal records on the first day of competition, including a trio of runners in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Junior Kristin Glen finished sixth in the event with a career-best time of 11 minutes, 21.16 seconds, followed by sophomore Lindsay Barajas, who crossed the finish line in eighth with an 11:35.43 clocking. Meanwhile, fellow classmate Makenzie Mabry placed 10th at 11:48.71. In the javelin throw, junior Michele Dannhausen posted SDSU's highest finish of the day with a fifth-place distance of 131 feet, 2 inches, while junior Kristin Olafsdottir came in ninth with a personal-best effort of 122-0. The Aztecs also received a top-10 finish in the hammer throw from junior transfer Andrea Martinez, who placed eighth with a heave of 164-6. In just her second 5000-meter run for SDSU, freshman Sara Beyers shaved nearly 22 seconds off her previous best with a time of 19:07.57 to set a new career record. Rounding out the limited schedule was sophomore Kai Wheeler, who paced the Scarlet and Black in the long jump with a leap of 18-5.75 to tie for the 10th spot.
The Asics/Steve Scott Invitational resumes Sunday starting at 10 a.m. with the pole vault, while the track events are scheduled to get underway at noon with the 4x100 relay.
