Volleyball Athletes Earn Mountain West Conference Academic Awards

June 23, 2008

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior setter Kristen Castillo, sophomore outside hitter Caitlin McMillan and redshirt freshman defensive specialist Courtney Lamphier have been honored as Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2007-08 academic year. Castillo, who completed her SDSU career ranked fifth in assists, had a 3.65 grade point average as a nursing major. McMillan compiled a 3.51 GPA in communications while Lamphier's GPA of 3.82 has come as a public relations major.

The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.

Four Aztecs were also named to the 2008 MWC all-Academic Team for fall 2008. That foursome includes senior middle blocker Kelly Wahlin (3.06 in nursing) and freshman middle blocker Lauren Salisbury (3.25 in business) along with Castillo and McMillan.

In order to be selected to the all-academic team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at SDSU while earning a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor on their respective teams.

The SDSU volleyball team had an impressive year in the classroom with 14 players achieving a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall 2007 season and 13 accomplishing the feat during this past spring semester.
