MPSF Championships: (3) USC 5, (2) Stanford 4
April 26, 2008
SAN DIEGO - Third-seeded USC upset No. 2 Stanford, 5-4, in an overtime thriller in the semifinals of the MPSF Championships on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Trojans improve to 19-6 and advance to the finals where they will take on top-seeded UCLA. The Cardinal falls to 24-4 on the season. USC took a narrow 2-1 lead after the first eight minutes of play, but the roles were reversed in the second period as Stanford came back to even the game at three at the break. After trading goals in the third frame, both teams stepped up on the defensive side of the ball, holding each other scoreless in the final stanza to force the extra period with a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation. USC's Alexandra Kiss opened the first overtime with a goal at the 2:39 mark. That tally proved to be the game-winner as neither team scored the rest of the way. In addition to the deciding goal, Kiss found the back of the net in the second quarter to lead the Women of Troy. Lauren Silver paced the Stanford offense with a hat trick, while Amber Oland notched a game-high 13 saves in goal. #3 USC 5, #2 Stanford 4
