SAN DIEGO - Eleventh-seeded Cal State Northridge defeated the No. 8 seed UC Irvine, 7-6, in the ninth-place game at the MPSF Championships on Sunday morning. The Matadors finish their season at 14-18 overall, while the Anteaters put a lid on their campaign at 16-12. CSUN dented the scoreboard first, but it was UCI who took the lead after the first eight minutes of play, scoring three times before the end of the period. In the second frame, the Matadors regained their momentum, finding the back of the cage twice to knot the score at three, but just 22 seconds later the Anteaters jumped back ahead on a Sarah Frost goal to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, both teams scored just once with UCI leading 5-4 going into the final eight minutes. The Anteaters enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 6-4 with 5:48 left in regulation, but CSUN scored three answered goals in the final 5:21 to complete the comeback. Allison Brookes, Chelsea Curran and Dayna Van Gorder each scored two goals apiece to pace the Matador attack. UC Irvine was led by Kat Plummer's two goals. MPSF Championship: 9th-place game
