April 27, 2008
SAN DIEGO - Ninth-seeded San Jose State used a 10-goal second-half barrage to upset No. 6 seed Arizona State on Sunday in the seventh-place game of the MPSF Championships at the Aztec Aquaplex. With the victory, the Spartans improve to 16-15 overall, while the Sun Devils fall to 21-13. ASU scored on its first possession and built a 3-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. The two teams traded scores in the second period before the Sun Devils enjoyed their biggest cushion of the day at 5-2 on a power-play goal at the 7:11 mark of the third stanza. At this juncture SJSU caught fire, outscoring Arizona State by a 5-1 margin during a 5:32 span to take their first lead of the contest a 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Two more Spartan goals early in the final frame made the score 9-6 before the Sun Devils broke a 7:44 scoring drought with a strike at the 5:27 mark. ASU trimmed the deficit to 9-8 during a 6-on-5 opportunity a little over a minute later, but that would be as close as the Sun Devils would get as SJSU tacked on three goals in the final 3:53 to hold on for the win. Juliet Moss had four goals, while Adrianna Vogt and Brianna Lindsey both netted hat tricks to pace the Spartans. The Sun Devils were led by Traci Aparicio's three goals.
