April 27, 2008
SAN DIEGO - Second-seeded Stanford captured third place at the MPSF Championships on Sunday afternoon with a 10-8 victory over No. 5 seed Hawai'i. The Cardinal improves to 25-4 on the season, while the Rainbow Wahine drop to 20-10. In a quiet opening period, Stanford notched the first score of the game at the 5:53 mark, taking a 1-0 advantage after eight minutes of action. UH dented the scoreboard after just under two minutes into the second quarter to even the match, before scoring two more goals for a 3-1 lead with 3:03 left in the quarter. The Cardinal stormed back, however, scoring three unanswered to close out the half with a slim 4-3 advantage. The two teams went back and forth in the third frame as Stanford recorded the last goal of the period to knot the score at seven heading into the final stanza. UH broke the tie at the 6:36 mark, but after another Cardinal goal, Lauren Silver put Stanford up for good by converting a penalty shot with 4:19 left in the game. Koree Blyleven added an insurance goal before time ran out as Stanford emerged with the win. Silver led the Cardinal with a hat trick, while Kelly Mason, Angela Turnbull and Leonie Van Der Molen each scored a pair of goals to pace the Rainbow Wahine.
