Redhawks Shine at Indiana Relays

BLOOMINGTON, IN (Sunday, February 3, 2008) - The Redhawks track & field team more than held it's own this past weekend at the Indiana Relays hosted by Indiana University at Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, IN. Despite the event being relay orientated, the Redhawks excelled in the open events with the men taking home two individual titles and one relay title and the women's team leaving the Hoosier State with two individual titles at the premier two-day event that featured over 35 teams.P> Freshman Robert Delaria garnered the team's first individual title when he won the 200 meter dash with a time of career-best 22.21. Junior Chris Gill, owner of the best 200 meter dash time in the OVC this season, ran the open 400 meter dash and finished second with a time of 48.96 after running a scorching 48.80 in the preliminaries the day before. Both Delaria and Gill teamed-up with senior veterans Chris Poindexter and Miles Smith to run the OVC's fastest 4X400 this season and securing the relay title with a time of 3:12.83 easily ahead of the Hoosiers team who finished with a time of 3:15.02. In the distance events Brandon Karcher finished second in the 5,000 meter run with an OVC-best time of 14:57.36. Teammate Brandon Funderburk finished in the top-20 with a time of 15:42.87. Two-time OVC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week John Berry captured his third-straight long jump title of the season with a distance of 7.45 meters. Brandon Colbert finished third in the shot put with a throw of 16.85 meters. Colbert also added an 11th place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 16.88 meters. The women's team was led by freshman Rachel Kahle who won the open 200 meter dash with a time of 25.61 setting a new career best for the youngster. Juli Koenegstein, who's pursuit of the sub-five minute mile came closer with a career-best 5:03.01 in the open mile. Here time placed her seventh. The 4X400 team of Kelley Good, Orie Ibe, Jerica Hamm and Whitney Thomas finished ninth with a time of 3:52.44. The time set a new season's best for the talented team. Thomas finished 12th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.92. Ashley Brewer was the top field finisher for the women. Brewer finished 11th in the weight throw with an impressive toss of 16.25 meters. Both the men's and women's team will have the week off before competing at the two-day Iowa State Cyclone Classic on February 15-16. Selected members of the men's team will compete at the prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational in the Big Apple (New York, New York) this weekend. Among those set to head to New York are the 4X400 relay team and John Berry. |
