CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Friday, April 4, 2008) The 27th Annual SEmotion relays started on Friday afternoon in record-breaking fashion at Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex. Only two events took place on a cool and soggy day, but both events saw record-breaking performances by two world-class competitors.

All-American and world record holder Brittany Riley of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale shattered the previous meet record in the hammer throw with a toss of 222' 08" on her final toss of the day. The previous record was held by Riley who set it at last year's meet. The toss also qualified her for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Susan King (Memphis) and Sasha Leeth (SIUC) finished second and third respectively with throws of 172' 11" and 172' 08". SIUC dominated the event as they took five of the first six places.

The Redhawks Brianna Egbuka finished eighth with a toss of 115' 03". All-OVC athlete Ashley Brewer was a late scratch but will compete tomorrow in the discus and discus.

Steffen Nerdel followed Riley's meet record-breaking performance with one of his own as he claimed the men's portion of the hammer throw with a toss of 221' 03" breaking the previous record set by Illinois State's Cedric Chapman in 1996. Nerdel's throw qualified him for the NCAA's as well.

SIUC's Brenton Siemons (196' 09") and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville's Scott Block (183' 05") finished behind Nerdel but joined him as NCAA qualifiers.

The Redhawks had only one athlete compete in the hammer with Andy Croxford finished 14th with a throw of 152' 07".

Tomorrow features a full slate of action as the field events start at 11:00 am with the long jump. The running events start with the 5,000 meter open run at 11:00 am. Complete results will be available after the meet on gosoutheast.com.
