Redhawks Split Doubleheader to Open Conference Play

March 21, 2008

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

By Tyler Koonce, Baseball Contact

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State and Tennessee Tech each won a single game in a doubleheader Friday. The Redhawks (7-7, 1-1) dominated the first game, hitting six home runs en route to a 16-3 victory. Tech (14-6-1, 1-1) answered back in game two with an 8-3 win.

Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, James Leigh, moved his record to a perfect 4-0 after earning the win in the first game. Leigh pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out eight.

Matt Wagner started the home run barrage in the bottom of the first with a monster two-run blast off of the light pole high above the right field wall. Tyrell Cummings added an RBI double in the three-run first.

Nick Harris and Jim Klocke hit back-to-back homers in the second to make consecutive three-run frames.

Klocke registered his first career multi-home run game with another solo shot in the bottom of the fourth.

Matt Wulfers hit his first blast of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth. Justin Wheeler added fourth homer of the year in the bottom of the sixth for the sixth long ball of the game.

Wagner led the offense with four hits in game one. Wulfers finished with a game-high four RBIs.

Jake Edwards took the loss for Tech after giving up 10 runs in four and one-third innings. He drops to 2-1 on the season.

In the second contest, Tech used a five-run second inning to propel them to the 8-3 win. The Golden Eagles registered 14 hits, including four from Thomas Nelson and three off the bat of Jake New. New notched a game-high three RBIs.

Wheeler, Wagner and Daniel Schuh added the RBIs for the Redhawks in game two. In the bottom of the fourth, it appeared that Southeast had cut the margin to two on a sacrifice fly by Harris to score Schuh, but after the junior safely slid across home plate, Tech appealed to third base and he was called out for leaving the base early.

Josh Syberg took the loss after throwing three and one-thirds, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out two Tech hitters.

The rubber match of the three-game set will be Saturday at 1 p.m. from Capaha Field.
