Southeast Falls to Arkansas State, 8-3

By Tyler Koonce, Baseball Contact CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Arkansas State used a four-run top of the sixth inning to push past Southeast Missouri State, 8-3, Wednesday night at Capaha Field. Drew Benes was 4-4 with four RBIs to lead the Indians. Ryan Hudgins got Arkansas State on the board with a solo home run to left field in the top of the first inning. Southeast answered in the bottom of the inning when Jim Klocke singled to left field to bring in Nick Harris, who led off with a triple off the wall in right-center. Benes struck for the first time in the second with an RBI double to left field. He added an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run double down the left field line to spark the four-run sixth inning. Blake Slattery scored the Redhawks second run on a wild pitch in the fourth and Justin Wheeler chipped in an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Chase Ware (4-3) earned the victory after throwing six innings, giving up only three earned runs although he allowed 10 hits. He struck out three and walked one. Corey Harness (0-1) took the loss for SEMO after pitching three innings and allowing three earned runs. He notched four strikeouts and also issued only one walk. Harris, Klocke, Tyrell Cummings and Tony Spencer all registered multi-hit performances. Southeast returns to Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend at Jacksonville State in Alabama. The teams will play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at the same time. |
