Southeast Suffers Doubleheader Sweep to Austin Peay

April 26, 2008

Game 1 Box Score  |  Game 2 Box Score

By Tyler Koonce, Baseball Contact

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Austin Peay scored the go-ahead run in the next to last inning in both games of Saturday's sweep over Southeast Missouri State. The Governors (21-21, 8-7) were outhit by the Redhawks (17-18, 7-8) in both contests and committed three errors in each game, but found a way to pull out the victories.

In game one, APSU put three runs across in the first inning, with two coming on the 19th double of the season by Will Hogue. They added single runs in the second and fifth innings to push the lead to 5-0.

Southeast battled back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Blake Slattery to score Trenton Moses. Zachary Blemker crossed the plate for the second run on an error by Govs first basemen Matt Kole.

Two innings later, the Redhawks pushed three runs across to tie the game. Jim Klocke hit a run-scoring single to left to bring in Tony Spencer. Moses would draw a bases loaded walk to plate and Justin Wheeler reached on an infield single, allowing Klocke to cross the plate.

Governors shortstop Tyler Farrar hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth that proved to be the difference.

Jake Brisbin (2-1) earned the victory, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Closer Daniel Tenholder earned his ninth save of the season with a scoreless ninth in game one.

SEMO starter Dustin Renfrow (3-4) took the loss after going 7.2 innings, giving up six earned runs. He struck out six and walked five others.

The second game was much the same story for Southeast. After going ahead 1-0 on an RBI single from Matt Wagner in the first, Redhawks pitching surrendered six runs in the top of the third to the Govs. Trey Lucas delivered the punishing blow with a three-run home run to left field.

Not to be outdone, the Redhawks scored two in the bottom of the frame when Tyrell Cummings scored on a fielder's choice by Wheeler. He would then come around when Moses reached on an error.

SEMO tied the game in the bottom fourth behind run-scoring singles from Cummings and Wagner. Harris would tie the game on a sacrifice fly to left to score Cummings.

Again, Farrar came through with the eventual game-winning RBI as he drove in Rafael Hill on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth.

Ryne Harper (3-2) was credited with the win after throwing two scoreless relief innings. Tenholder pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit, for his tenth save of the season.

Ryan Poole (0-1) took the loss for Southeast after yielding two earned runs over three innings of middle relief.

Both teams return to the diamond for a 1 p.m. series finale Sunday at Capaha Field. Josh Syberg will start for Southeast against Ryan Mantooth.
