SEMO Baseball Faces Arkansas State in Jonesboro
April 22, 2008
SERIES HISTORY: Arkansas State leads the all-time series 24-27, including an 8-3 victory on April 9 at Capaha Field. Drew Benes led the offensive attack for the Indians, going a perfect 4-4 with three doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. TEAM MATCHUP: Southeast is 16-16 on the season and is coming off two exciting walk-off victories on Saturday and Sunday against Samford. Arkansas State is 16-23 and was swept in a weekend series at Western Kentucky. LAST SERIES: After dropping the first game of a three-game weekend set, SEMO battled back to win the final two games against Samford. In game two Saturday, the Redhawks won in thrilling fashion, 11-10, in extra innings on a walk-off single by Tyrell Cummings. Sunday, true freshman Trenton Moses delivered his own walk-off single as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning. MAJOR UPSET: On April 1, Southeast pulled off one of the biggest wins in school history. The Redhawks beat No. 6 Vanderbilt, 12-8, in Nashville. SEMO pounded Commodores pitching for 15 hits with the 4-run eighth inning proving to be the difference. Jim Klocke led the offensive attack with four singles and two RBIs. Dustin Renfrow earned the victory after allowing only one run over three innings and Jake Kemper earned his third save in as many appearances, going the final two and two-thirds innings, giving up only one earned run with two strikeouts. HOME RUN BIRRAGE: Redhawks hitters have blasted 44 home runs this year, including a season-high six in the blowout victory over Tennessee Tech to open OVC play on March 21. Tyrell Cummings leads the team with 10 long balls, including three on April 6 in the 9-8 victory over Murray State. He is the first Southeast player to reach double digits in home runs since Brian Hopkins (18), Zach Borowiak (15) and Justin Christian (13) in 2003. Last year's team finished with a total of 45 home runs on the season. HOGAN REACHES ANOTHER MILESTONE: Head Coach Mark Hogan notched his 400th victory as the Southeast head coach on April 6 against Murray State. His Southeast record stands at 403-338-1 with the current campaign being his 14th with the program. Last season, he became the all-time wins leader, surpassing legendary head coach Joe Uhls with his 374th career victory on April 1, 2007. EARTHQUAKES FELT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI: Two earthquakes were felt on Friday morning in Cape Girardeau. The first quake with a magnitude of 5.2 shook much of the midwest at 4:37 a.m. central time. Nearly six hours later, an aftershock occurred at 10:14 a.m. with a magnitude of 4.6. No problems were reported with campus infrastructure and there was no damage. There were anywhere from 100-200 calls to the Cape Girardeau 911 center around the time the first quake was felt. The epicenter of the tremor was located in Mount Carmel, Ill., and shaking was felt as far north as southern Ontario. It was the largest quake felt in the region since 1968. |
