Murray State Edges Southeast Missouri 86-85

Murray, Ky. - Tyler Holloway sank two free throws with five-seconds remaining to give Murray State an 86-85 come from behind Ohio Valley Conference win in a game televised nationally on ESPN 2. Southeast played without head coach Scott Edgar who was suspened for the game by OVC commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher because of comments made in his post-game radio show after Thursday's nights game with Morehead State. The Redhawks, who were beaten by 28 points in an earlier game with the Racers, took the lead with 9:47 remaining in the first half and built up a 47-39 halftime lead due in large part to Kenard Moore who was 4-5 from three. Murray State made several runs early in the second half, but the Redhawks retained thelead until a 3-pointer by Kevin Thomas tied the game at 60-60 with 13:25 remaining. The Racers took the lead at 63-62, but Southeast regained the lead on Mike Rembert layup and maintained a narrow leaduntil 2:39 remained when the Racers went up 80-79. Again, the Redhawks battled back to regain the lead and the game see sawed until the final minute. A pair of free throws by Moore gave Southeast a three point, 85-82, lead with just 56-seconds remaining. With 31-seconds remaining, Rod Pearson missed the front end of a one and one free throw chance and Murray State pulled within one at 84-85 with 21-seconds remaing. Southeast turned the ball over with 17-seconds remaining and the Racers held for the final shot, but Holoway was fouled with 5-seconds remaining an calmly hit both free throws to give Murray the lead. The Redhawks in bounded the ball to Pearson who dribbled through traffic the length of the court and got up a contested jumper in the lane at the buzzer, but the ball rolled off. It was the seventh straight win for the Racers who are 12-7 overall and 8-3 in the OVC while Southeast suffered its sixth straight loss to stand 11-11 overall and 6-6 in the OVC. The Redhawks will play another nationally televised game on Tuesday night when they host Austin Peay in a 6 p.m. game that will be seen on ESPNU. |
