Redhawks Host Tennessee-Martin on Saturday

BASKETBALL GAME INFORMATION Saturday, February 2, 7:30 p.m. Tennessee-Martin @ Southeast Missouri Show Me Center, Cape Girardeau, Mo. THE TEAMS: Southeast Missouri is 12-11 overall and 7-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Redhawk ended a six-game losing streak with a 121-116 triple overtime win over league leading Austin Peay on Tuesday night. The Redhawks also have OVC home wins over Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky and road wins over Samford, Jacksonville State and Eastern Illinois. The losses are home losses to Murray State and Morehead State and road losses at Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and Murray State. The Redhawks also have wins over Louisiana Tech, Evansville, Culver-Stockton, Longwood and Central Methodist with losses to nationally ranked Xavier, Coppin State, Tulsa and Illinois State and Bradley from the Missouri Valley Conference. Southeast is 6-2 at the Show Me Center. Tennessee-Martin is 10-14 overall and 6-8 in the OVC. The Skyhawks boast the nation's second leading scorer in junior guard Lester Hudson who averages 26.4 points per game. THE COACHES: Scott Edgar is 23-31 in his second season as head coach at Southeast after previous head coaching stints at Murray State and Duquesne. His collegiate record is 131-126 in his ninth year as a head coach. Edgar is 10-0 vs. UT-Martin. Bret Campbell is 96-155 in his 9th season at UT-Martin. THE SERIES: Southeast leads the series 38-20. LAST SEASON: Southeast swept the two games, winning 81-79 at the Show Me Center and 73-69 at Martin. **REDHAWKS NOTES**. LIGHTING THE SCOREBOARD: Southeast and Austin Peay combined for 237 points on Tueaday night in a game televised nationally by ESPNU. The Redhawks prevailed 121-116 in the three overtime thriller. The combined 237 points is a Show Me Center and school record. HERRING SCORES: Junior college transfer Jaycen Herring had a career high 29 points and 12 rebounds in recording his first double-double in the 121-116 win over Austin Peay. He is averaging 15.2 points per game during OVC games. He is shooting .528 from the field, .400 from three and .771 from the line. The 6-5 transfer from Palm Beach CC who played his freshman season at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Herring has scored in double figures in 16 of his last 18 games played, and averages 13.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. HOT, HOT, HOT: Junior guard Kenard Moore is 11-16 (.688) from three in the last two games, both nationally televised. In OVC play, Moore is shooting .444 from three. Overall, he averages 8.9 points per game while shooting .414 from three and .813 from the line. He was 7-10 from three and 5-6 from the line while scoring a career high 28 points against Austin Peay. HARRIS SHINES: Junior Hank Harris had a career high 12 points in the Austin Peay game. He was 2-3 from the field, 2-2 from three and 6-6 from the line. Harris had nine points in the third overtime. DEPTH IS A KEY: Depth has played a key role for the Redhawks this season. In a stat researched by Chris Forman of the United States Naval Academy, Southeast is one of seven teams in NCAA Division I to have 10 or more players score in double figures this season. Wofford and Southeast have 11 players while Navy, Duquesne, Creighton, Belmont and Lipscomb have 10. The Redhawks who have scored in double figures this season and their game highs include Brandon Foust (25), Will Bogan (23), Rod Pearson (22), Jaycen Herring (29), Jimmy Drew (19), Kenard Moore (18), Calvin Williams (16), Marcus Rhodes (15), David Johnson (12), Mike Rembert (17) and Hank Harris (12). PEARSON CONSISTENT: Sophomore Rod Pearson is the only Redhawks player to start all 23 games. He is second on the team in scoring with 233 points and leads in assists with 58. Pearson averages 10.1 points and 2.4 assists. OVC HONORS: Senior Brandon Foust was selected as a co-winner of the OVC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 7 after averaging a double-double in win wins over Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois. He averaged 16.5 points and 11 rebounds per contest and also added 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Calvin Williams, a transfer from Colorado, was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season after averaging a double-double in two opening OVC wins. Williams averaged 15.5 points and 11 rebounds per game in the wins over Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. BENCH CONTRIBUTES: In the road win at Louisiana Tech, 29 of the 59 points came from the bench. In the OVC opening win over Tennessee State the bench scored 61 of the 102 points scored. In the road win at Jacksonville State, the bench scored 49 of 81 points. The bench scored 41 of 66 points in the OVC win over Eastern Kentucky. IMPRESSIVE START BY BOGAN: True freshman Will Bogan, 6-10, 300, is off to an impressive start with the Redhawks. He had 23 points at Illinois State. Bogan had the game winning tip in with 1.9-seconds remaining in the win at Jacksonville State. He had 17 points against league leading Austin Peay and is shooting .585 from the field in OVC games. After 20 games played, Bogan averages 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. REMBERT ROUNDS INTO FORM: Senior post player Michael Rembert is recovering from two off season knee surgeries, has 30 points and 19 rebounds in the last two games. Rembert, who has started 16 of the last 18 games, is averaging 6.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday at Murray State. DREW FROM THREE: Long range bomber Jimmy Drew, a sophomore from Anna, Ill., is shooting .403 from three. He was 4-4 from three against Samford including the game winner with one second remaining. He did not play against Murray State or Austin Peay because of a foot injury and is doubtful for the Tennessee-Martin game. FOUST OUT FOR SEASON: Senior forward Brandon Foust, 6-6, has been lost for the remainder of the season with a knee injury suffered in the Jan. 12 game at Austin Peay. Foust, a preseason all-Ohio Valley Conference choice, injured his knee when landing from a dunk shot with 11:57 remaining in the game. Surgery will be required. For the season, Foust averaged 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He shot .481 from the field, 370 from three and .780 from the free throw line. For his career at Southeast, Foust played in 49 games and averaged 11.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. TWO EARLY SIGNEES: The Redhawks signed two players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Martino Brock, 6-5 guard from Nashville Christian Academy, and Mark Caviness, 6-5 swing player from Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, Fla., both signed with Southeast. Brock is averaging 22 points and 7 rebounds per game this season and was recently named MVP of the Martin Luther King Tournament in Memphis. Caviness is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds per game. COACHES VS. CANCER: Coach Scott Edgar and his assistant coaches will wear sneakers with their suits on Saturday to show support for the fight against cancer. Thousands of coaches nationwide will wear sneakers in support of the National Cancer Society and the fight against cancer. AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast has a record of 212-92 (.697) at the Show Me Center since the facility opened in 1987. The Redhawks are 7-2 at the Show Me Center this season while leading the OVC in home attendance with 3,429 per game. SID STREAK: Southeast SID Ron Hines has worked 812 consecutive basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980. NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: Next week the Redhawks go back on the road for games at Morehead State on Thursday, Feb. 7 and at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 9. |
