Cape Girardeau, Mo. - The defense scored 31 first quarter points on the way to a 50-11 win in the annual Southeast Missouri State football spring scrimmage. The defense had three interceptions in the first quarter including one returned 90 yards for a touchdown by Josh Woods.

The defense could score in a number of ways including two points for sacks and six points for interceptions and defensive touchdowns. The defense had the three pass intereptions including one returned for a score in the first quarter and also had a fumble recovery by Nick Ketelsleger.

Eddie Calvin had an interception returned 39 yards and Jerald Williams had a pick returned three yards. The defense also recorded nine sacks including three from converted tight end Ben Gugler.

"Gugler was an all-state defensive end in high school and also played defensive end in junior college," said Southeast coach Tony Samuel. "I thought he played well on defense today."

The offense had only one touchdown, a 39-yard TD throw from junior college transfer Dustin Powell to Jared Van Slyke. Van Slyke, son of former Major League Baseball player Andy Van Slyke, had three catches for 118 yards and one TD. He also saw a brief stint at quarterback and completed 1-2 passes for 11 yards.

"Van Slyke is a tremendous athlete who is also a great competitor," Samuel said. "He will work at both quarterback and receiver in the fall."

The defense held the Redhawks offense to a minus 18 yards on the ground and allowed just 317 yards passing. Starting quarterback Houston Lillard completed just eight of 21 passes for 151 yards and was intercepted three times.

"All in all it was a good day for football," Samuel said. "We had a good scrimmage and nobody got hurt. We made a lot of progress this spring, particularly on fundamentals."
