Women's Hoops Heads to Kentucky for Weekend Road Swing

TIP-OFF: Southeast Missouri State women's basketball travels to Kentucky for a two-game road slate this week beginning Thursday afternoon with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup versus host Morehead State at Johnson Arena starting at 4:15 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the radio at ESPN/KGIR 1220 AM with announcers Erik Sean (Play-by-Play) and Corey Miggins (Analyst) in addition to being shown live online at OVCSports.tv. SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: Southeast enters the week with a 15-6 record with a 10-2 ledger against conference opponents. The Redhawks posted a 58-51 overtime win over UT Martin on Feb. 2 at the Show Me Center in a game that was shown nationally on ESPNU. Senior forward/center Missy Whitney leads Southeast with averages of 14.9 points, seven rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Junior guard Tarina Nixon (10.5 ppg) leads the team in assists (2.9 apg) and steals (2.0 spg). Junior guard Sonya Daugherty is second on the team in scoring at 13.3 ppg. SCOUTING THE EAGLES: Morehead State heads into Thursday's contest sporting a season record of 7-14 that includes a 5-7 mark in OVC play. The Eagles dropped an 88-43 non-conference decision Monday evening at Virginia in their first game since Jan. 26. Freshman guard/forward Chynna Bozeman paces Morehead State with averages of 12.3 points and 1.7 steals per game while shooting a team-best 89 percent at the free throw line. Senior guard Tarah Combs is second on the team in scoring at 10.9 points a game and has drained an OVC-leading 63 three-pointers. Sophomore center Brittany Pittman paces the Eagles with 9.5 rebounds a game and ranks third among the NCAA Division I block leaders with an average of 3.9 blocks per contest. SERIES HISTORY: Southeast has produced a 24-7 lead in the all-time series with Morehead State and has captured eight of the last nine meetings, including a 66-58 win at the Show Me Center on Jan. 24. Last season, the season series was split at 1-1 with each team winning a game on its home floor, including a 68-58 win by the Eagles on Jan. 24, 2007. OVC LEADERS: Southeast ranks first in the OVC in turnover margin for overall games and conference games. The Redhawks have posted a +5.45 rating in all of their games while posting a +3.27 rating against OVC opposition. NIXON GAINS TOP THREE SPOT ON SOUTHEAST'S CAREER TREYS LIST: Junior guard Tarina Nixon has been inching closer towards Southeast's career record for three-pointers this season. She is now tied with Paula Corder-King (1998-00) for the third-best mark in school history with 115 made threes. Nixon needs eight threes away from the second-place tally of 123 which is held by former Redhawk Natalie Purcell (2004-06). THINKING PINK!: Southeast will participate in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Think Pink week during its Feb. 14 game against Eastern Illinois at the Show Me Center. The WBCA started Think Pink in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball on college campuses and communities. The Redhawks are one of 800 women's basketball programs on the collegiate and high school level to participate in this year's program. UP NEXT: Southeast concludes the week with an OVC battle at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Richmond, Ky., with the tip-off at 2 p.m. |
