CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Friday, May 09, 2008) The awards and honors continue to come in for senior Redhawks softball player Megan McDonald (Cape Girardeau, MO/Cape Central) as she was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII First Team for her achievements on the field and in the classroom. This is the first time McDonald has been honored with this prestigious award and is the first Redhawks softball player to achieve this honor since former teammate Kelly Birk was named All-District in 2004.

McDonald carries a 3.62 grade point average in Speech Pathology, was named to the First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference for the third time in her career on Wednesday. She led the team and finished second in the OVC with a .406 batting average while collecting 67 hits, 15 doubles, nine homeruns and runs batted in.

Her average ranks fourth on the school's single season charts and she's only the fourth player in school history to bat over .400. She finished her career ranked in the top five in eight offensive categories including career batting average, doubles and homeruns.

Academically she is two-time member of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll and a recipitant of the OVC's highest academic award, the OVC Medal of Honor. She is also a four-time Southeast Scholar-Athlete honoree.

McDonald will graduate in December with her degree and plans on moving on to graduate school at Southeast to continue her studies.

McDonald is the fourth Redhawks athlete this school year to be named to a COSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team joining Courtney Alexander (soccer), Sandra Blake (gymnastics) and Rachel Blunt (women's basketball). She is also one of only three softball players in the OVC to be named to an All-District First Team joining Tennessee Tech's Beth Boden and Stephanie Fischer.

Players named to the COSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Teams will have their names forwarded on to the ballot for COSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.
