Southeast Drops Match to Illinois-Chicago in Opening Weekend, 6-1

By Brett Maikowski, Tennis Contact COLUMBIA, Mo. - Southeast closed out their season-opening weekend with a 6-1 loss against Illinois-Chicago Sunday morning at the Green Tennis Center. The Flames improve their record to 2-2 with the win, while the Redhawks drop to 0-2 for the season. In singles, No. 1 senior Bryce Kristal won her first match of the season by defeating Ilinca Cristescu by matching scores of 6-4. Junior Julia Masotti and sophomore Elise Nattier were defeated by identical scores of 6-1 in the No. 2 and No. 5 matches to Lubica Nadasska and Amy Jellish. Senior Drew Kristal also fell to Kristen McPhillips in the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-0. In No. 4 singles, sophomore Alyce Kelly lost a close match to Grace Gill-Morlis 6-2, 6-3. Finally, in the No. 6 slot, freshman Taylor Orahood went down to Jenna Reisch 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, the No. 1 team of the Kristals won five games before finally succumbing to Nadasska and McPhillips 8-5. In the No. 2 spot, Masotti and Kelly fought hard before losing a close match against Suzanna Gracanin and Cristescu by a score of 8-6. In the No. 3 doubles slot, Nattier and Orahood lost 8-0 against Gill-Morlis and Reisch. Southeast continues its season-opening road trip as they travel to Lincoln, Neb. to face Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. On Sunday, Feb. 24, they will go up against Nebraska at 10 a.m. |
