By Brett Maikowski, Tennis Contact MACOMB, Ill. - After dropping three straight, including two conference matches, Southeast made its way back into the win column with two 4-3 decisions over Western Illinois and Milwaukee over the weekend. The first win came on Saturday when Southeast regained the overall series lead at 3-2 against WIU. Today, SEMO remained undefeated against Milwaukee after putting themselves up 3-0 in the overall series. Starting with singles play against WIU, Southeast won half of the matches. In No. 1 action, Bryce Kristal took down Amanda Griffin by scores of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Drew Kristal also went to three sets in No. 2 play with her opponent, Kim Lennartsson, but came up short 6-3, 4-6, 3-6. In the No. 3 spot, Julia Masotti defeated Ashley Clark by identical scores of 6-4 and Alyce Kelly took home the win with identical scores of 6-3 against Kate Kennedy in the No. 4 slot. In No. 5 singles, Elise Nattier wasn't able to come up with the win after going down to Yana Meinert 6-1, 7-5. Also in No. 6 competition, Taylor Orahood fell to Courtney Brooks by matching scores of 6-0. In doubles, the Kristals easily captured the 8-3 win in No. 1 play over Lennartsson and Wang. Masotti and Kelly were able to earn the doubles point for the Redhawks after defeating Griffin and Kennedy by a tight score of 9-8. The No. 3 pair of Nattier and Orahood went down to Meinert and Clark by a margin of 8-4. In singles against Milwaukee, the exact same Redhawks were victorious in their matches. Earning her seventh consecutive victory and improving her record to 10-3 for the season, Bryce Kristal led off by picking up the 6-3, 6-4 win over Kelly Drvaric. Drew Kristal succumbed to Kari Kastenholz 6-1, 6-0, while Masotti battled to three sets with Martina Schnapp before pulling out the 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win. Picking up the final singles win for the Redhawks was Kelly after she defeated Sammi Schoen 6-4, 6-3. Rounding out the lineup, Nattier came up shy of the win after falling to Jenna Felsher, 7-5, 6-3, and Orahood was defeated by Ashley Schoneman by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Southeast was once again able to pick up the doubles point with the same two teams picking up the wins. The Kristal tandem notched an 8-5 decision over Drvaric and Kastenholz in the first match, and the pair consisting of Masotti and Kelly captured an 8-2 win over Schoen and Schoneman. Nattier and Orahood weren't able to take the win as they fell 8-3 to Schnapp and Felsher. The Redhawks now sit at 5-8 for the season after their victories this past weekend. The third match scheduled for today between Southeast and Upper Iowa was cancelled due to inclement weather. Southeast returns to action starting on Thursday in Martin, Tenn. as they compete in the first of four matches in four days. |
