Redhawks Fall to Gamecocks in First Match of Weekend
April 4, 2008 By Brett Maikowski, Tennis Contact CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast tennis team struggled to come up with wins today as they lost 7-0 to Jacksonville State in their first home match in a month. The loss puts the Redhawks at 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the OVC, while it improves the Gamecocks to 8-9 for the season and 5-1 in the OVC. In doubles, the Redhawks came up with one win from the No. 2 tandem of Julia Masotti and Alyce Kelly, who took down Eloah Lopes and Kimberly Ferris by a score of 8-6. The No. 1 team of Bryce and Drew Kristal fought back to win a total of five games after losing the first five to Viviane Marani and Martina Dessbesell, but eventually came up short, 5-8. In No. 3 doubles, Elise Nattier and Taylor Orahood battled to the end, but also fell short to Babette Lombardo and Kristen Fuller, 5-8. In singles, Southeast didn't fare well as they lost all six matches. Leading off for the Redhawks, Bryce Kristal and sister Drew were both defeated by identical scores of 2-6, 2-6 in No. 1 and No. 3 action to Marani and Ferris. In No. 2 and No. 5 competition, Masotti and Kelly lost by matching scores of 3-6, 3-6 to Dessbesell and Lopes. Nattier, in No. 4 singles, succumbed to Julianna Renesto, 1-6, 1-6, and Orahood wasn't able to come up with the win in No. 6 play, as she lost 0-6, 0-6 to Fuller. Southeast continues its home stand this weekend with a 12 p.m. match against Tennessee Tech (4-13, 1-4 OVC) tomorrow and a 1 p.m. match against Samford (11-5, 3-0 OVC) on Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Southeast Tennis Complex. |
