Rome, Ga. - In a close game against No. 2 Lee University, the Shorter College Hawks baseball team scored one run in the bottom of the ninth to pull within two runs of the Flames, losing 4-2. The Flames (37-1, 16-0) got off to an early start in the first inning with a run and made the game 3-0 in the fourth, with two solo home runs. Shorter (10-23, 3-13) managed to cut their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, when an RBI single from Ibrahim Lopez sent Trevor Miller home to make the game 3-1. After another solo home run from Lee in the ninth, the Hawks kept things interesting in the bottom of the inning. Jake Broome sent a ball through the first baseman's legs to reach first and advanced on a single from Lopez. Jarrod Lewis came in to pinch hit and put another run in the Hawks column on an RBI single. A Flames error loaded the bases, but a tough Lee team pulled out their 34th straight victory. Lopez finished the game 2-for-4, with an RBI. Dustin Bowers got the loss for the Hawks (1-6), pitching eight innings of solid baseball, giving up six hits and striking out three. Lee's Dallas Sims got the win. Shorter will play Lee again in a doubleheader tomorrow at the Ledbetter Complex at Shorter College, beginning at 2 p.m. |
