Softball sweeps home opener, 9-1 & 11-0

Rome, Ga. - The Shorter College Lady Hawks softball team started their season off perfectly on Saturday afternoon by taking two games from the Tennessee Wesleyan Lady Bulldogs, 9-1 and 11-0, at the Alto Park Softball Complex in Rome.

In the first game, Kandi Bruno was 3-for-3, scoring twice with two singles and a double, Jessica Sanders was 2-for-3, scoring twice with a single and a double, Lakyn Newton was 2-for-3, scoring twice, and Lindsey McDaniel hit a two-run home run in the first innings.

Shorter's nine runs came in the first, second and fourth innings and gave pitcher Becca Thomas her first win of the season (1-0). She pitched a two-hit five innings game, striking out three with one unearned run.

In the second game, Libby Munson was the star as she pitched a one-hitter, striking out a remarkable eight batters in five innings.

Sanders was 2-for-3 with a single and a two-run home run, and Kerry Hammond had four RBI, including a double and a two-run home run.

The Lady Hawks hope to keep their season on a roll on Tuesday as they travel to Covenant College for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
