Baseball Loses Rubber Game to Saint Peter's, 9-7

March 30, 2008

Final Stats

Saint Peter's scored six runs in its final three at bats rallying from 5-3 and 7-5 deficits to post a 9-7 MAAC win over Siena Sunday in Jersey City. The victory gave the Peacocks a 2-1 series win.

Freshman Kevin Quaranto's double scored two runs in the first inning to give the Saints and early 2-1 lead. Nick Messinger led off the third with a triple and scored on Phil Cahill's fielder's choice ground out to push the advantage to 3-1.

Saint Peter's quickly erased that deficit in the fifth when Mike LaCava reached on a fielder's choice that scored John Lynch. Mike McGuire followed with a single up the middle to knock in Andrew Martirano, tying the score at 3-3.

Jason DeFilippo doubled home a pair of runs in Siena's fifth, to put the Saints back on top.

Saints' starter Craig Marcellus left with the 5-3 lead after tossing six strong innings and allowing a leadoff single in the seventh. The Peacocks rallied against the Siena bullpen, tying the score with two runs in the seventh. A bases loaded grounder took a bad hop, turning a potential double play ball into the game-tying hit.

Messinger and Rick Seltzer each singled home runs in Siena's half of the frame to put the Saints back up, 7-5. Once more, Saint Peter's had an answer.

McGuire hit a ground rule double to knock in two runs to tie the score at 7-7 and Kyle Strang hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored the go ahead, and eventual winning run, giving Saint Peter's its first lead of the game 8-7.

Edwards gave the Peacocks some insurance with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the ninth driving in Kevin Madison to account for the final 9-7 score.

Cahill had three hits for Siena. Messinger and Chris Klepps each had two.

Siena is scheduled to host Quinnipiac on Tuesday and Dartmouth on Wednesday.
