Saints Sweep Big Red in Ithaca behind Solid Pitching

April 22, 2008

Final Stats Game 2

Siena swept a baseball doubleheader from Cornell at Hoy Field this afternoon 2-1 and 2-1. Craig Marcellus and Dan Miklas picked up the wins with solid outings and senior Tom Hopkins earned the save in both games.

Jacob Willis singled and scored on Eric Mruczek's hit to break the ice in the fourth inning of game one. Siena (16-23) took a 2-0 lead in the sixth when Mruczek again plated Willis with a sharp single down the left field line.

Willis and Mruczek each collected two of Siena's five hits in the opener. Catcher Phil Cahill had the other.

Cornell (11-24) inched closer in the bottom of the sixth on Scott Hardinger's RBI hit, but Marcellus induced an inning ending double play to avert further damage. Hopkins worked the seventh allowing just one walk while striking out two.

Marcellus was brilliant on the hill sacrificing just the three hits and two walks in his six innings of work in earning his second straight win after beginning the year 1-5.

The Saints again took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two as Anthony Giansanti drove home reigning MAAC Player of the Week Nick Messinger with a single.

The Big Red tied the game in the fifth on an RVI double by Brian Kaufman.

Freshman Kyle Sumple started and worked five innings allowing just one run and four hits, but he walked four. He left with the score tied and received a no decision.

Siena scored the winning run in the top of the seventh on a one-out single by senior Chris Klepps. Giansanti, who singled to begin the frame, scored the run.

Klepps and Giansanti had two hits apiece for Siena which out-hit Cornell 6-5.

The Saints return to action Wednesday in Loudonville for a 4 p.m. game with NJIT.
