Saints Bury Blue Hose in Men's Lacrosse Season Opener, 19-3

Feb. 16, 2008

Box Score

Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena men's lacrosse team received goals from 13 different players in cruising to a 19-3 win in the season opener over Presbyterian (0-2) this afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Junior attackmen Matt Girsh and Chris Zarins led the Saints (1-0) offensive onslaught with three goals apiece. Junior transfer Mike Lashomb and freshman midfielder John Rogener each tallied two goals in representing the Green and Gold's other multiple goal scorers.

"I was very pleased with the overall performance of the whole team today," noted head coach Brian Brecht. "After a disappointing scrimmage last weekend, I thought we came out and had a strong week of practice and were able to tighten up some things that allowed us to execute very well today."

The Saints raced out to an early 5-0 lead just six minutes into the contest with scores from five different goal scorers. Siena led 7-1 after the first and held a commanding 10-1 lead entering intermission.

Girsh, the reigning MAAC Player of the Year and Preseason Player of the Year, wasted no time getting off to a hot start with a pair of goals and assists in the opening half. Girsh finished with a game high six point performance (three goals, three assists) on the afternoon.

Siena dominated all stat categories and held a 51-23 shots advantage and won 21 of 26 face-offs. In addition to Girsh, seven other Saints posted multiple point performances. Zarins, Ryan Duggan and Kenny Mazzone each notched four points, while Lashomb, Rogener, Shaun Dunn and Brendan Murphy each finished with two.

The Saints will enjoy a week off now before returning to action a week from today when they host Harvard at Siena Turf Field in a men's and women's lacrosse doubleheader next Saturday. The men's start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
