Saints Stumble in MAAC Opener; Fall to Canisius 13-7

April 4, 2008

Final Stats

Loudonville, N.Y. - Canisius received hat tricks from Ashley Gray and Chelsea Martinez en route to a 13-7 Golden Griffins win over the Siena women's lacrosse team in the conference opener for both squads this evening in Buffalo, N.Y. Ryan Tierney and Catherine Quinlan each netted a pair of goals for the Saints who dropped their fourth straight contest.

In what was a back and forth first 30 minutes, Siena (2-7, 0-1) took their only lead of the contest just nine seconds into the fray. Alexandra Kain won the opening draw control and quickly fed the Saints' leading scorer Caitlin Mikel for the team's quickest goal of the season.

But Canisius (6-5, 1-0) quickly responded with a pair of tallies in just over a minute stretch to take a 2-1 lead. The Saints tied the game moments later on a Lynn Harkins free-position goal, before the Griffs again battled back to take the lead for good.

The Green and Gold cut into the deficit to pull as close as 5-4 with just under two minutes remaining in the opening half on a pair of Tierney goals, but could get no closer.

The Golden Griffins answered back tallying eight of the next nine goals to extend their lead and stave off a late comeback attempt to get the victory.

Tierney added an assist to lead all Saints scorers with three points. The league leader in draw controls per game, Kain added six more while also contributing three groundballs in a solid all-around effort. Senior captain Katie Ostrye was strong on the back line, scooping four groundballs while causing two turnovers.

Siena concludes its opening weekend of MAAC play with the final stop on its Buffalo swing on Sunday afternoon against Niagara. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. from the Nicholls School in Buffalo.
