HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss won the opening game of the Coca-Cola Classic vs. Cal State Northridge, 6-2, at Pete Taylor Park Friday night in front of 3,162 fans. "This was another good win for us tonight," head coach Corky Palmer said. "We pitched well and got the big hits when we needed them." Barry Bowden picked up his third win of the season throwing another great game tonight of the Golden Eagles. Bowden threw seven innings, allowing seven hits, and one earned run. "Barry will always give you a chance to win the game," Palmer said. "Our bats started out slow tonight and Bowden was able to keep it close until we could get the big hits we needed." The Golden Eagles collected double digit hits for the fourth consecutive game, with 10 on the evening. Four different players had multiple hits for Southern Miss. Corey Stevens entered the game as a substitute in the sixth inning and went two-for-two with a two-run homerun. Brian Dozier was two-for-four with a run scored, Kyle Maxie was two-for-four with a double and two RBI and Keith Winstead was two-for-two with a run scored and two walks. Wade Weathers came in to finish the game in relief of Bowden, he threw a perfect final two innings, striking out three. Northridge scored the first runs of the game in the top of third inning, an unearned run for an early 1-0 lead. TS Reed led off with a single and Ryan Pineda followed with a single to left field that Drew Carson charged and over ran the ball advancing to second and third base. Reed was able to come in and score on a ground ball to Brian Dozier hit by Richard Cates.
Cal State added to their lead in the top of the fourth with another run. Jowen-James Murray-Thornton reached on an infield single, was sacrificed to second and went to third on a ground out. He came in to score on a RBI single by catcher Chris Hannick, giving the Matadors a 2-0 lead. The Southern Miss bats finally came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 4-2 lead with a little help from the Matador defense. The Golden Eagles scored four unearned runs with two outs. Kyle Maxie doubled to right-center field and Keith Winstead singled to left field and took second on a bouncing off-speed pitch in the dirt. Drew Carson hit what appeared to be the inning-ending ground ball to third base, but Ryan Pineda over threw first base allowing Maxie and Carson to score. Corey Stevens entered the game for Michael Ewing in the previous inning and in his first at bat of the game homered off the inflatable Coke bottle that is over the left field wall, putting Southern miss on top 4-2. Southern Miss added to their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brian Dozier singled through the hole on the left side and Trey Sutton followed with a single up the middle. Kyle Maxie added two RBI with a double to the wall in left-center field, scoring Dozier and Sutton. In the first game Northridge defeated Liberty, 11-5. the Golden Eagles will play Liberty University on Saturday at noon. Cal State and Liberty will rematch at 3:30 Saturday afternoon. -southernmiss.com- |
