HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss pounded out a season high 15 hits and David Clark threw a complete game shutout, in a 5-0 victory of Liberty University in the second day of the Coca-Cola Classic in front of 3,058 fans at Pete Taylor Park Saturday afternoon.

"We played pretty well all the way around today," head Coach Corky Palmer said. "We swung the bats well, making solid contact and was able to get a couple of long balls today, we also got a great pitching performance from Clark. I thought we beat a pretty good club today".

David Clark (2-1) threw a complete game, seven hit shutout, walking only two and striking out seven. Clark threw 107 pitches in the 2:07 minute game, the shortest game of the year for the Golden Eagles.

Head Coach Corky Palmer celebrated his 54th birthday on Saturday by handing Liberty their first shutout in 212 games, dating back to April 10th of 2004.

Liberty ace pitcher David Stokes came into the game with a perfect 3-0 record and had not surrendered a run all season. Southern Miss roughed him up for 13 hits and five runs giving him his first loss of the season.

Trey Sutton and Anthony Doss had two RBI's each to lead the Golden Eagle offensive attack. Brian Dozier, Corey Stevens and Drew Carson each had three hits a piece, including a solo homerun by Carson.
 

 

Carson hit his team leading fourth homerun in the bottom of the second inning, a high fly ball that landed just left of the scoreboard in left-center field to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 early lead.

Southern Miss added to their lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brian Dozier doubled off the wall in right-center field and Trey Sutton followed with a two-run homerun to the exact part of the park to put Southern Miss on top 3-0.

Trey Cuevas and Drew Carson both had two-out infield singles and Anthony Doss drove them home with a double into the right-center field gap for his fourth RBI of the season.

Southern Miss will play the final game of the Coca-Cola Classic tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m., the game has been moved up 30 minutes from the originally scheduled start time of 11:00 a.m. due to travel considerations for Cal St Northridge.
