HATTIESBURG, Miss. - No. 20 Southern Miss dropped the second game of the doubleheader with No. 24 East Carolina, 4-2 Saturday evening at Pete Taylor Park.

Starting Pitcher Barry Bowden threw 46 pitches before leaving the game with a injury to his shoulder in the third inning. Brian Leach replaced him and had the best outing of his career, throwing 6.1 innings scattering three hits and allowing only one run.

The Golden Eagles pounded out 12 hits, with Corey Stevens and Chris Matesich each have a three hit game.

Southern Miss played 22 total innings this afternoon, splitting the DH with ECU. They had 12 hits in both games

East Carolina jumped on the board for three runs in the top of the first inning off Bowden. Harrison Eldridge led off the game with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch. Eldridge scored on a infield single by Ryan Wood. Stephan Batts doubled down the left field line and a fielding error by first baseman Adam Doleac allowed the second run of the inning to score. ECU executed a safety squeeze to score the third run of the inning.

Southern Miss scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as James Ewing led off with a double down the left field line and Brian Dozier singled down the right field line, scoring Ewing.

The Golden Eagles added another run in the eighth inning as Brian Dozier singles to start the inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Keith Winstead.
 

 

ECU added their final run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Wood, scoring Trent Whithead.

The two teams will meet again for the final game of the series Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
