April 13, 2008 HATTIESBURG, Miss.- - No. 29 Southern Miss took final game of the Arkansas State series, 6-3, to complete the weekend sweep over the Indians. "We jumped out to a early lead and I was thinking it would be a good offensive day," head coach Corky Palmer said. "Chris Matesich stepped up for us once again today, it is good to have those senior leaders that can step it up when they need to." Chris Matesich led the offensive charge for the Golden Eagles again Sunday afternoon with three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Kyle Maxie added in a three-for-four afternoon with two runs scored. Keith Winstead and Trey Cuevas has two hits a piece for the Golden Eagles as well. Starting pitcher David Clark (3-4) had a solid outing, throwing five innings allowing only four hits before leaving the game in the sixth after taking a line drive off the knee. The severity of his injury is not yet know. Tyler Conn worked two and a third innings, entering the game with the tying run at second base in the seventh inning, to record his NCAA leading 12th save of the season. He struck out five and allowed only two hits. Southern Miss (23-11) wasted no time scoring as Bo Davis led off the Golden Eagle half of the first with a solo home run off the scoreboard. Two batters later Trey Cuevas hit his second home run of the week, a solo shot to right-center field. Southern Miss added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Brian Dozier and Trey Cuevas both drew two-out bases loaded walks, for a 4-0 lead.
The Indians (15-21) rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning before closer Tyler Conn entered the game struck out Jett Jones with the tying run on second base to end the threat. An RBI single by pinch hitter Cade Baxter and right fielder Aaron Ferguson. Arkansas State added an earned run on a dropped fly ball by Drew Carson allowing pinch runner AJ Prickel to score, cutting the lead to 4-3. Southern Miss answered right back in the bottom of the seventh as Chris Matesich added a RBI single and Michael Ewing hit a sacrifice fly scoring Kyle Maxie from third and giving Southern Miss a 6-3 advantage. The Golden Eagles will conclude the current 10 game homestand on Tuesday as Mississippi Valley State University visits "The Pete." Freshman Seth Hester is scheduled to start his first career game.
