AUBURN, Ala. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team lost to No. 31 Auburn, 7-0. Auburn opened the match winning two of three doubles matches to earn the point. Alex Petropoulos and Nick Maurillo got the first victory, 8-6, over Oscar and Diego Machuca. Lukas Marsoun and Tim Puetz quickly followed suit with an 8-6 victory own over Andrew Poole and Markus Wessinghage. Southern Miss' Domagoj Anic and Jan Burmeister defeated Pawel Dilaj and Milan Krnjetin, 8-6, to finish out doubles play and give Southern Miss its only victory of the day. Puetz defeated Oscar Machuca at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3, while Alex Petropoulos downed Burmeister, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. The Tigers sealed the match at No. 6, when Krnjetin came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Strate Krstevski. Rounding out the singles' play, was Dilaj defeating Andrew Poole, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 and Marsoun had to come back to win his second set 6-0 after losing the first set 6-4 to Anic. Marsoun then battled through a first-to-10 third set tie-breaker to beat Anic 10-7. It took three sets, including two tie-breakers for Maurillo to defeat Diego Machuca in an exhausting match after two set-deciding tie-breakers. Maurillo won the first set, 7-6, and then lost the second, 6-4, then battled back in the deciding tie-breaker, pulling out an 11-9 win.
Southern Miss will play No. 44 Arizona State in Auburn on Saturday. |
